Deontay Wilder vs Tyson Fury: Promoters Bob Arum and Frank Warren explain when rematch will happen
There is a plan in place for the second fight
Promoters Bob Arum and Frank Warren have mapped out their plan for the Deontay Wilder vs Tyson Fury rematch to talkSPORT.com.
The ‘Gypsy King’ opted out of an immediate second fight with the WBC heavyweight champion earlier this year, following their disputed December draw.
Many felt the Brit won the first bout despite suffering two knockdowns, though instead of taking a direct rematch, he instead inked a co-promotional deal with Arum and Warren.
As a result, his next contest will take place on June 15 against Tom Schwarz in Las Vegas, and then he will have either one or two more outings before meeting Wilder again.
Warren told talkSPORT.com: “Providing he comes through his fight, then we’d like to get him out again in the autumn.
“Then set up a big fight [against Wilder] for either late in the year or more likely early new year.
“That’s what we’d like to see ideally.
“The name of the game is building his profile in the States…
“He has all the opportunities now to make the Tyson Fury brand huge in America, which as far as making these fights is concerned, will be great for him and great for the opponents.
“They’ll earn a bundle of money with the fact he’s building his profile.”
After June 15, Fury’s autumn fight is scheduled for September 28.
According to Arum, it’s then just a case of deciding whether to have one more contest in December or jump straight from there into the Wilder rematch.
Also speaking to talkSPORT.com, Arum added: “ESPN will decide whether his next fight is on ESPN+, ESPN or maybe on ABC [in the United States] which is the over-the-air network owned by Disney.
“It’s a massive platform for the entire country, but part of what we’re trying to do is to build ESPN+ to be the biggest sports streaming service in the world, which it is…
“The question is, when do we schedule a Wilder fight? If it’s in March/April, then we probably wouldn’t do a December fight.
“If it was later than March or April, we would wanna do a December fight.
“He doesn’t wanna fight in February because he wants to celebrate Christmas with his family.”
