The injury has come as a bitter blow to Maurizio Sarri, whose side face Arsenal in the final of the Europa League in Baku in under a fortnight

Chelsea have confirmed Ruben Loftus-Cheek sustained a ruptured Achilles tendon in their friendly against New England Revolution and have said the player will undergo surgery on Thursday evening.

The midfielder was withdrawn in the second-half of the match at the Gillette Stadium with an ankle problem.

He left the stadium on crutches with his left foot in a protective boot amid fears he has suffered ligament damage.

And Chelsea have now confirmed the injury in a brief statement.

“Ruben Loftus-Cheek has seen a specialist today (Thursday) and will have surgery on his ruptured Achilles’ tendon this evening,” the statement read.

“The Chelsea midfielder left the pitch during the second half of yesterday’s game in Boston, USA.”

Blues boss Maurizio Sarri, who furiously threw his coat to the ground as Loftus-Cheek received treatment, will be without Loftus-Cheek for Chelsea’s Europa League final clash against Arsenal in a week’s time and potentially for the opening months of next season.

The England international has had several minor injuries throughout the campaign but has recently become an integral player in Sarri’s line-up in recent months

“We will find out more about a couple of players in that period and then I am going to have to make a couple of decisions,” said Southgate. “But we can change if we have injuries after that date. Frankly there is every chance that is going to happen.

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate confirmed in a press conference today that Loftus-Cheek was going to be in his squad for next month’s Nations League finals, but he had to call-up a replacement after waking up and seeing the midfielder’s injury.

“We will find out more about a couple of players in that period and then I am going to have to make a couple of decisions,” said Southgate. “But we can change if we have injuries after that date. Frankly there is every chance that is going to happen.

“We have just got to make the best possible decisions really with the information that we have. It is constantly moving.

“I went to bed last night and Ruben is in the squad and playing brilliantly and now it is a huge disappointment for him. He misses now a major European final and a brilliant opportunity with us.

“In particular he has really come on in the last few months and looked strong and playing with a lot of confidence and I am really disappointed for him in particular.”
